2003 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002

Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 2003 1-cent WDDO-002 and cross-referenced as CONECA 2-O-VIII and Coppercoins 2003P-1DO-001, this Lincoln Memorial Cent doubled die obverse shows extra thickness on the letters of LIBERTY, most pronounced on the top right of the Y, with notches on the bottom left corners of E, R, T, and Y. Some extra thickness is also visible on the date. The Lincoln Memorial Cent was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in copper-plated zinc at 2.50 grams and 19.05 mm diameter, featuring Victor David Brenner's obverse portrait and Frank Gasparro's Lincoln Memorial reverse. Die markers on the obverse include a small die gouge south-southeast of the G in GOD and a die gouge well north of the second zero in the date. The reverse shows two small die gouges forming a semi-colon shape to the left of the top of the F in the FG designer's initials. The CONECA Class VIII designation indicates this is a tilted hub doubling variety, where the hub was angled relative to the die during one of the hubbing impressions.
