Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 2003 1¢ WDDO-001 and cross-referenced as CONECA 1-O-VIII, Crawford CDDO-001, and Coppercoins 2003P-1DO-002, this Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent displays extra thickness on the letters of LIBERTY with notches visible on the top left corners of the letters. Two die stages have been documented. Stage A carries two short die scratches running SE from the eye and a die gouge on the forehead north of the eyebrow on the obverse, with no significant reverse markers. Stage B retains the same obverse features while the reverse develops a die gouge touching the upper right side of the O in ONE and a die scratch running ENE from the top left of the N in ONE. The multiple cross-references across four attribution systems confirm this variety's recognition. Struck in zinc-coated copper composition, the 2003 Lincoln Cent carries Victor David Brenner's obverse portrait and Frank Gasparro's Memorial reverse. The Class VIII extra thickness with corner notches on LIBERTY provides clear diagnostics visible under moderate magnification.
