Description

Light spread manifests as notches on the upper northwest serifs of the LIBERTY inscription on this 2003 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent, cataloged by VarietyVista as DDO-001 — the first-listed doubled die obverse for this date. Die markers UVC-2482 and DMR-002 identify the specific die pairing, with Stage A documented as both obverse and reverse in Early to Mid Die State (EMDS) and Stages B and C at Mid and Late Die State remaining unconfirmed. The serif notching pattern indicates a subtle displacement during hubbing where the secondary impression shifted slightly northwest relative to the primary, catching only the thin serif extensions of the Caslon-style lettering used in LIBERTY. While the spread is classified as light, the notch effect on serif terminals is one of the more reliable diagnostics for this variety because serifs act as amplifiers of tiny hub movements — even a few thousandths of an inch of displacement produces a visible step on these delicate projections. Victor David Brenner's Lincoln portrait has appeared on the obverse of every Lincoln Cent since 1909, and the LIBERTY inscription positioned to the left of Lincoln's bust is one of the most frequently affected design elements on doubled die obverses because of its distance from the die center. The 2003 Philadelphia production run of over 3.3 billion cents generated an extensive catalog of die varieties, and DDO-001 represents the primary obverse doubled die for the year.
