2002 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

Attributed by John Wexler as the primary doubled die obverse for the 2002 Philadelphia Mint Indiana State Quarter, WDDO-001 displays doubling visible on the underside of Washington's earlobe — a subtle but diagnostically significant area where hub doubling manifests on the standard John Flanagan obverse portrait shared across all State Quarter issues. The Wexler variety identification is 2002-P 25c IN WDDO-001, placing this within the Indiana reverse design year of the 50 State Quarters program. Die markers for attribution include an obverse die crack running through the upper part of the designer's initials, providing a secondary confirmation point beyond the doubling itself. The reverse shows no significant die markers. Submitted by Jessy Gozum and cross-referenced with no other known catalog numbers, this variety represents the sole primary DDO listing for the 2002-P Indiana quarter. The State Quarters program, running from 1999 through 2008, produced five unique reverse designs annually, and each date-mint-design combination generated its own set of potential hub doubling events during the die manufacturing process. Hub doubling occurs when the hub and working die are slightly misaligned during one of the multiple impressions required to fully sink the design into the die — the resulting doubled image is then reproduced on every coin struck from that die.
