Description

Fourth documented rim cud for the 2002 Philadelphia Mint Indiana State Quarter, CU-25c-2002P-04(IN) represents a different die than the second cud at this date, CU-25c-2002P-02(IN). Each cud catalog number corresponds to a unique die fracture, meaning at least four separate dies developed rim breaks during the 2002-P Indiana production run — a count that reflects the large number of die pairs consumed when striking hundreds of millions of quarters bearing a single state's design. The Indiana reverse showcases a stylized race car, a nod to the Indianapolis 500, along with the state outline and 19 stars. A rim cud occurs when accumulated striking stress causes a section of die metal to crack, separate, and fall away from the rim, leaving a cavity that fills during subsequent impressions. State Quarter cuds were actively sought by collectors during the program's decade-long run, as the annual design changes meant each year brought new reverses and new opportunities to discover die breaks.
