2000 (S) Proof Lincoln Memorial Cent - S-1DER-001WS Trail Die Reverse

Description

2000S-1DER-001WS is a wavy-step die on a 2000-S proof Lincoln cent, and TrailDies notes it was the first proof die of this kind added to its files. In the number, 2000S is the date and San Francisco mint, 1 the cent, DER a reverse design extension, 001 the file, and WS the wavy-step type, meaning trails that cross the Memorial's stairs. Here the stairs bend under columns 5 through 8, and the fluting of columns 2, 3, 11 and 12 carries down into the stylobate below them, both effects moderate and crisply defined. The offset direction is 190°, just west of due south. Jean Lee found the die. Trails, wavy steps included, are usually attributed to rotary polishing of the die; some attribute them to die-to-hub movement.
