Description

ADC-5c-2000D-02 is an atypical die clash on a 2000-D Jefferson nickel, cataloged by Mad Die Clashes. It shows two clash events, a weak one and a strong one, neither abraded, and MDC gives an overlay of the die positions for each. The coin is also struck through a foreign object: an arc-shaped feature, raised on the coin and sunk into the die, that may date from the same moment as the strong clash. On the obverse, the TS of CENTS and the LO of MONTICELLO show, and Monticello's base line runs from behind Jefferson's head to the foot of the R in LIBERTY, joined in another view by the roof line. The right side of the reverse die appears to have taken most of the force. MDC suggests the foreign object was in the striking chamber during the clash and tilted the hammer (obverse) die, which would account for where the strong marks fell. On the reverse are the bow in Jefferson's hair, his queue and the bottoms of the zeros of the date; the back of his head with the bases of ER of LIBERTY, just below Monticello's base line and through the O of MONTICELLO; bits of his hair within the word MONTICELLO; and his collar, from the stronger event, merging out of the dome's left side. The line of his forehead left the one mark seen from the weak event. MDC also pictures the die dent from the struck-through object. The coin is in Mike Diamond's private collection.
