Description
Produced at the Denver Mint in the final year of the twentieth century, this sole documented cud for the 2000-D Jefferson Nickel captures a rim die failure on one of the last coins to carry Felix Schlag's original Monticello reverse before the 2004-2005 Westward Journey redesign and 2006 update. Cataloged as CU-5c-2000D-01, the variety preserves the raised featureless mass characteristic of a complete rim separation — where the fractured die fragment falls away and the resulting cavity fills with metal during striking. The year 2000 marked a milestone in American coinage, and Denver struck substantial quantities of nickels bearing the familiar portrait that had appeared continuously since 1938. Schlag's design would survive only four more years before Lewis and Clark-themed reverses appeared in 2004-2005, followed by Joe Fitzgerald's forward-facing Jefferson portrait in 2006. A single cataloged cud from the 2000-D date suggests relatively normal die attrition rates, unlike the heavy cud concentrations seen on certain 1980s dates. For collectors, this variety represents the intersection of millennium-year coinage and the twilight of an iconic American coin design.
