2000 (D) Jefferson Nickel - Atypical Die Clash ADC-5C-2000D-01

Documented by MadDieClashes as ADC-5c-2000D-01, this strong atypical die clash variety was discovered by David Strzalkowski on a 2000-D Jefferson nickel struck at the Denver Mint. Atypical die clashes differ from standard die clashes in that they result from unusual contact between the dies, often involving the dies striking together at an angle or with foreign material between them, producing clash marks in unexpected locations or orientations. This particular variety is classified as a dual clash event, meaning two separate clashing incidents are recorded on the same die pair. On the reverse, the roof line from Monticello is visible as a transferred impression, and two distinct clash marks left by the back of Jefferson's neck and his queue (the gathered ponytail of hair) can be identified. Additionally, the throat area of Jefferson can be seen clashed just below the L of PLURIBUS. The 2000-D Jefferson nickel is composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel, weighing 5.0 grams with a 21.2 mm diameter, part of the Jefferson Nickels Original Design 1938-2003 series. Felix Schlag's Monticello reverse and his original Jefferson portrait were still in use for the 2000-D issue. Denver produced over 1.5 billion nickels in 2000, and die clashing is a relatively common occurrence in high-speed minting when a planchet fails to feed between the dies, causing them to strike each other directly. However, dual-clash events of this strength are considerably rarer and more desirable to collectors who specialize in die clash varieties.
