1999 (P) Jefferson Nickel - Typical Die Clash TDC-5C-1999-01

Description

Cataloged as TDC-5c-1999-01 in the MadDieClashes reference, this 1999-P Jefferson Nickel exhibits both obverse and reverse die clash marks from a single clash event. The coin is in the collection of David Strzalkowski. On the obverse, clash marks left by the Monticello design include a partial M from the word MONTICELLO visible in front of Jefferson's eyebrows, transferred when the reverse die impressed its design onto the obverse die face. The reverse shows the back portion of Jefferson's hair and his queue with bow—the ribbon-tied ponytail characteristic of 18th-century portraiture—clashed just above the right side of Monticello. Jefferson nickels are particularly productive for die clash hunting because the portrait and building designs have distinctive outlines that create recognizable transferred elements. The 1999-P issue was struck in large quantities at Philadelphia during the final years before the Westward Journey design changes of 2004-2005, making these clashes findable in quantity. Both sides showing clear clash marks simultaneously indicates the dies came together with sufficient force to leave strong reciprocal impressions.
