Description

Opening the spiked head catalog for the 1999 Philadelphia Jefferson Nickel, SKH-5c-1999P-01 documents a raised spike on Jefferson's obverse portrait paired with a reverse die crack extending from the left base of Monticello to the rim. The spike — a small, horn-like projection caused by a die gouge — is the primary classification feature, while the die crack represents progressive deterioration on the reverse. Jefferson Nickels from the original Felix Schlag design series, which ran from 1938 through 2003, are struck in the 75% copper, 25% nickel alloy that gives the denomination its silvery appearance and considerable hardness. That hardness exacts a toll on coining dies: nickel planchets resist deformation more than copper or bronze, channeling greater stress into the die face with each impression. Die cracks running from architectural details on Monticello to the rim are particularly common because the building's fine lines create stress-concentrating features in the die steel. As the first cataloged spiked head for the 1999-P date, this variety anchors the sequence for collectors pursuing Jefferson Nickel die varieties. Documented by the Cuds on Coins project.
