Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team (Wexler Variety ID: 1999-P 25c DE WDDO-002), this 1999-P Delaware State Quarter obverse doubled die presents in an unusual location: doubling shows on the underside of Washington's earlobe, requiring magnification for reliable detection. Obverse die markers are specific: a short die gouge extends south from the lower right underside of the diagonal of the N in UNITED; a small die gouge sits below and between the bottoms of the E and R of LIBERTY. Reverse die markers are particularly rich: a die crack from the top of the 1 in 1787 to the bottom of the A in DELAWARE; a die scratch from the top of the first E in DELAWARE to the rim; die gouges below the A of STATE; and a die crack from the L of PLURIBUS to the rim. The earlobe doubling is consistent with a hub shifted slightly in the vertical axis, producing a close downward offset on fine ear detail. The 1999-P Delaware State Quarter was the inaugural issue of the 50 State Quarters program. No cross-references to other attribution systems are known.
