1999 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001
Error
Description
From the inaugural year of the fifty-state quarter program, this 1999 Philadelphia Mint Delaware State Quarter WDDO-001 carries the distinction of being a doubled die variety on the very first state quarter ever issued. Doubling shows on the underside of Washington's earlobe on John Flanagan's obverse portrait, a location that has proven sensitive to hub displacement across many quarter dates due to the fine detail and curved relief of the ear. Delaware, as the first state to ratify the Constitution, was fittingly the first state honored in the program that ran from 1999 through 2008. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 1999-P 25c DE WDDO-001. Die Markers: Obverse: A die gouge can be found under the lower horizontal crossbar of the F in OF; a small die gouge (dot) can be found to the right of the bottom of the E in AMERICA; die scratches present in the field area. The combination of die gouges near the F and E provides reliable secondary attribution. As the first doubled die obverse cataloged for Delaware, WDDO-001 documents a hub error on coinage that launched one of the most popular collecting phenomena in modern numismatics. Die scratches extend northeast from the top of the G in GOD.
