Description

Cataloged by Trail Dies as 1999D-1DER-003T and found by Jeremy Gardner, this Denver Lincoln Memorial Cent reverse documents die deterioration at Stage B in middle die state. Trail lines — raised linear features caused by progressive die erosion — appear on multiple elements: the E, P, and U of E PLURIBUS UNUM, the OF below the motto, and the last S of STATES all exhibit trail line distortion. The offset direction of approximately 300 degrees indicates the angular orientation along which the die surface eroded, helping characterize the specific deterioration pattern. Die markers include a die gouge between I and N of IN and two die dots between E and N of CENT. Trail die varieties document the natural lifecycle of a working die as it degrades through continuous use. Victor David Brenner's obverse portrait paired with Frank Gasparro's Lincoln Memorial reverse served as the cent's standard design throughout this period. Denver's high-volume 1999 production accelerated die wear, creating conditions favorable for trail die formation and making this date productive for deterioration variety research.
