1999 (D) Lincoln Memorial Cent - D-1DER-003T Trail Die Reverse

Description

Light trails mark this 1999 Denver cent reverse, filed by TrailDies as 1999D-1DER-003T. The number gives the date with the D mint mark, the denomination digit (1, one cent), DER (design extension, reverse), file 003 and T for a plain trail die. The lines leave the upper left corners of some letters in E PLURIBUS UNUM, the word OF and the final S of STATES, running at 300°, west-northwest, toward the upper left of the coin. TrailDies describes a middle-die-state pair: a die gouge between the I and N of IN on the obverse, and two small die dots between the E and N of CENT on the reverse. Jeremy Gardner found the die. Rotary polishing of the die is the cause most often given, with die-to-hub movement as the minority explanation.
