Description
TrailDies' second wavy-step file for the 1999 Denver cent, 1999D-1DER-002WS, carries the same trail pattern as file 001, so the die markers are what separate them. In the code, 1999D is date and mint, 1 the cent, DER the reverse-side design extension, 002 the file and WS the wavy-step type, the effect where trail lines run over the Memorial's stairs and bend them. Moderate step deviation sits below columns 5 to 8, and columns 2 and 3 push moderate fluting into the stylobate, all at 190°, slightly west of straight down. The coin described is from late in the die's life (stage C), with die scratching high in bay 1 and a die dot above the left base of the building; the obverse shows nothing. The usual explanation is a rotary tool polishing the die face, though some attribute the lines to movement between die and hub.
