1997-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-030
Error
Description
Among the more visually distinctive doubled die reverses for the Lincoln Memorial Cent, this 1997 Denver WDDR-030 produces an immediately recognizable anomaly: a bar extending from the hand to the lower leg of the Lincoln statue on the seventh column. This bar — created by hub displacement connecting two normally separated design elements with a raised bridge of metal — transforms a subtle statue detail into a prominent diagnostic. Cross-referenced as CONECA 2-R-VIII, cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 1997-D 1-cent WDDR-030. Extensive die markers on both sides provide additional confirmation. The Lincoln Memorial reverse, used from 1959 through 2008, includes the diminutive seated Lincoln statue visible between columns — a design element so small that any doubling affecting the figure produces dramatic visual results relative to scale. The connected hand-to-leg bar shows how even modest hub displacement on miniature features can create striking variety diagnostics. Die Markers: Obverse: A die gouge runs toward the rim inside the upper opening of the N in IN. A short die gouge runs south from the rim above the left opening of the W in WE. Reverse: Two parallel die scratches run NE from the central left edge of the N in UNITED to the rim, crossing through the I in UNITED. A die gouge (dot) shows well south of the U in UNITED, level with the top of the left memorial stairs. A short die gouge shows on top of the central crossbar of the T in CENT.
