1997 (D) Lincoln Memorial Cent - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-003

Description

1997-D WDDR-003 is a doubled die reverse on the 1997-D Lincoln Memorial cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. The doubling is on the left side of the seventh column, right of the statue's legs. On obverse Stage A, a small gouge sits north of the R in LIBERTY and another inside the lower E of LIBERTY. Further gouges lie SE of the G in GOD, well left of the I in IN, and well north of the 99 of the date, and a short diagonal gouge is left of the upper mint mark. On obverse Stage B none of the Stage A markers could be found, and Wexler says it is still uncertain whether this is a new obverse die; a gouge lies below the mint mark. On reverse Stage A, a gouge touches the S of PLURIBUS at the middle of its right side, and a small gouge is between the bottoms of the A and M in AMERICA. A gouge sits just right of the T in CENT near its base. Two gouges lie left of the O in ONE, and one sits inside the left part of that O. A small gouge is at the bottom of the ninth bay, and inside the D of UNITED a gouge abuts its right side. On reverse Stage B, several Stage A markers can still be seen: the gouge on the right-side middle of the S in PLURIBUS, the small gouge between the bottoms of the A and M in AMERICA, and the gouge inside the left part of the O in ONE. The rest have worn away. Stage B adds a gouge at the rim, a little to the right of AMERICA's first A. Billy G. Crawford submitted Stage A and Steve Young Stage B. Crawford lists it as CDDR-006.
