1997-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-014
Error
Description
Skipping from WDDR-011 to WDDR-014 in the catalog sequence, this gap reflects the non-sequential way varieties are sometimes discovered and cataloged — numbers 012 and 013 may exist for other mint marks or represent earlier listings. WDDR-014 for the 1997 Denver Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent documents another unique reverse die whose hubbing alignment deviated sufficiently to produce attributable doubling. Denver's die production in the late 1990s relied on hubbing presses that impressed the master hub design into die blanks through multiple applications of enormous pressure, and each impression had to align precisely with the previous one. Thermal expansion of the hub, microscopic debris on the die face, or slight mechanical play in the press alignment mechanism could all introduce the displacement that creates a doubled die. The consistency with which 1997-D cents yielded new DDR discoveries suggests active collector examination, particularly among roll searchers who examine large quantities of circulated cents. Cataloged by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 1997-D 1c WDDR-014, this variety belongs to the Lincoln Memorial Cents 1959-2008 series.
