1996 (P) Lincoln Memorial Cent - P-1DER-044T Trail Die Reverse

Description

1996P-1DER-044T has two sets of trails, both on AMERICA. One, on AME, runs at 250°, west-southwest; the other, on MERICA, runs toward the rim at 116°, east-southeast. TrailDies numbers it as a Philadelphia cent of 1996 with a design extension on the reverse (DER), file 044, trails (T), and likens it to files 028T and 032T. At the middle die state described, the obverse has many gouges around IN, several around the date and a small one inside Lincoln's ear. The reverse shows deep scrapes from a feeder finger running from the upper left quarter into the Memorial; TrailDies cautions that earlier or later coins may lack them. Will Brooks found the die. The usual view is that polishing the die with a rotary buff produces lines like these; some instead blame the die moving against the hub.

• Stage “B“, obverse is MDS – numerous gouges around IN; several gouges around the date. Small gouge inside ear.
• Reverse is MDS – at this stage, there are deep die scrapes from the feeder finger in the NW quadrant into the memorial. It’s possible earlier or later stages do not have the scrapes. This die is similar to 028T & 032T.
