Description

1996P-1DER-042T is a dual-direction trail die with lines running at 080°, slightly north of due east, and at 260°, slightly south of due west, directly opposite each other. They appear on UNITED STATES, the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM, the NE of ONE and CENT. In the code, 1996P is the year and Philadelphia mint, 1 the cent, DER a reverse design extension, 042 the file and T the trails. The late-die-state coin TrailDies describes was struck through a large foreign object, which left its mark high in bays 5, 6 and 7; no obverse markers are noted. John Rosenberg found it. Trails like these are generally traced to polishing the die with a rotary wheel, and less often to the die moving against the hub.
