Description
On 1996P-1DER-040T the trails are confined to ONE CENT and run in two directions only 40 degrees apart: 080°, almost due east, and 120°, east-southeast. TrailDies calls it dual directional; the entry does not say which letters carry which set. Its number covers the 1996 Philadelphia cent, TrailDies' DER grouping for design extensions on the reverse, file 040 and the T for trails. TrailDies' example comes from very late in the die's life. A small gouge sits beside the G of GOD at its leg, and on the reverse more gouges lie beneath AMERICA's R and C and surround CENT's T. Tanaka Davis found it. A rotary polishing tool working the die is the standard explanation for trails; some prefer movement of the die against the hub.
