Uncovered by Jason Dick, this 1996 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent trail die reverse exhibits the characteristic raised partial design element that results when a die contacts another die or hub outside normal striking alignment. Die markers for Stage B place the obverse at mid die state with no distinctive markers noted, while the reverse at mid die state shows a die gouge over the first T in STATES along with clash marks in bays 2 and 3 of the Lincoln Memorial design. The bay numbering system used for Memorial Cent reverses refers to the recessed areas between the columns of the Memorial building, providing precise location references for die markers on this architecturally detailed reverse. Trail die varieties on Lincoln Memorial Cents document instances where dies came into contact during production setup or misfeeds, leaving transferred impressions that persist through subsequent strikes.
