Description

1996P-1DER-038T has moderate trails on ATES in STATES, on the motto's letters at their top left and on ER in AMERICA, where TrailDies points out how crisp the lines are. They run at 330°, north-northwest. In TrailDies' number, 1996P gives date and mint, the cent is the 1, the reverse design extension is DER, and 038T is the file with its trails letter. At the late die state described, AMERICA has gouges left of the M and on the left side of the I, a retained break sits between the U and N of UNUM, and a chip marks the upper left of column 3. Trails are usually explained as the product of rotary polishing of the die; a minority explains them as the die moving against the hub.

• Stage “C”, obverse is LDS – none noted.
• Reverse is LDS – a die gouge is seen to the left of the M in AMERICA. Another small die gouge is seen on the left side of the I in AMERICA. There is a retained die break between the U and N of UNUM. There e is a die chip on the left upper part of column 3.
