1996P-1DER-037WS Trail Die Reverse
Error
Description
The 1996-P Lincoln Memorial Cent 1DER-037WS is a trail die reverse variety — a manufacturing artifact produced when a working die in early preparation or after excessive polishing retains ghostly transferred design elements from the hub that are incompletely impressed. These die preparation artifacts result in characteristic surface anomalies on struck coins that differ from hub doubling or mechanical doubling. This variety is documented in Stage B, the mid-die state. The reverse shows die damage in and around the right side shrubs on the Memorial building base; a teardrop-shaped die dent is visible under the left side of the Memorial base; small die dots appear in the lower portion of bay 2 of the building; and a small die dot sits to the right of the P in PLURIBUS. The obverse in Stage B is mid-die state with no noted die markers. Gasparro's Lincoln Memorial reverse contains fine architectural detail that makes bay and shrub areas sensitive to die damage artifacts. Trail die collectors will recognize the bay-2 dots and building-base teardrop dent as consistent with this variety's profile.
