1996 (P) Lincoln Memorial Cent - P-1DER-032T Trail Die Reverse

Description

Moderate trails on 1996P-1DER-032T come from the M of UNUM and the final period of the motto, every letter of AMERICA, the letters of CENT and the FG initials. It is a two-direction die, though not obviously so: the lines run at 090°, due east, and at 270°, due west, and the clearest place to see both is the pair of trails at the lower corners of the M in AMERICA. The code shows a cent (1) of 1996 from Philadelphia (1996P), listed under reverse design extensions (DER) as file 032 with trails (T). At the middle die state described, a small gouge sits beneath the ER of LIBERTY, out in the field. Michael Pope of Illinois found it. Polishing the die face with a rotary buff is how such lines are usually explained, though a few attribute them to die movement against the hub.
