1996 (P) Lincoln Memorial Cent - P-1DER-028T Trail Die Reverse

Description

On 1996P-1DER-028T, fairly strong trails hang from AMER in AMERICA, fading from left to right across the four letters, and run at 200°, south-southwest. TrailDies' number joins the date and P mint mark to the cent's 1, adds DER, TrailDies' reverse design-extension tag, and ends with file 028 and T for trails. The middle-die-state coin it describes is heavily scratched: light north-south scratches behind Lincoln's head on the obverse, moderate to strong scratches inside every bay of the Memorial, and a long one running southeast from the first S of STATES. Bob Piazza of Florida found the die. Trails are commonly credited to polishing of the die with a rotary buff, while some credit the die moving against the hub.
