1996P-1DER-028T Trail Die Reverse

Description

Discovered by Bob Piazza of Florida, the 1996P-1DER-028T trail die reverse on the Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial Cent shows relatively strong trail lines on the AMER of AMERICA, decreasing in strength from left to right. The offset direction is 200 degrees, placing the displacement toward approximately the seven o'clock position — nearly opposite the 030-degree offset seen on some Denver trail dies. Die markers at Stage B identify mid-die state: the obverse displays light die scratches running north-south behind Lincoln's head, while the reverse shows moderate to strong die scratches inside the entire Memorial bays and a long die scratch running southeast from the first S in STATES. The decreasing trail line intensity from left to right across AMER traces the displacement gradient, with the leftmost letters receiving the strongest effect. The extensive die scratches inside all Memorial bays suggest this reverse die had been in service long enough to accumulate substantial secondary marking. As a Philadelphia issue, the 1996 cent carried no mintmark, and Piazza's discovery documented another trail die in the growing Lincoln Memorial Cent trail die census.
