1996 (P) Lincoln Memorial Cent - P-1DER-027T Trail Die Reverse

Description

Trails on 1996P-1DER-027T reach across the lettering: every letter of AMERICA, the ENT of CENT, the NE of ONE, the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM and STATES, plus the left corner of the Memorial's roof. Every line runs at 240°, west-southwest, down and to the left. Within TrailDies' scheme, 1996P-1DER means a 1996 Philadelphia cent with a reverse design extension, and 027T is file 027, trails. Two die states are listed. At the middle state, clash marks show in bays 8 and 9; at the late-middle state, gouges appear between the S and T of STATES and just right of CENT's T. Jimmy Ehrhart and Jeremy Gardner found the die. The common explanation is a rotary buff used to polish the die face, while some writers point instead to the die moving against the hub.
