1996 (P) Lincoln Memorial Cent - P-1DER-025T Trail Die Reverse

Description

1996P-1DER-025T has trails from the top edges of the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM, from STATES and from the tops of the Memorial's columns, running at 340°, north-northwest. TrailDies notes that other 1996-P trail dies share this direction, so it relies on markers: on the obverse, at a very late state, a die dot over the E of LIBERTY and scratches below Lincoln's chin; on the middle-state reverse, gouges near UNITED (around its U and beneath its N) and between the M and E of AMERICA. Its code is TrailDies' usual sequence: date and mint, denomination digit, side code DER (reverse design extension), file 025 and T for trails. Jimmy Ehrhart of Florida found it. Trails are usually linked to rotary polishing of the die; a minority links them to the die moving against the hub.

Die Markers

• Stage “C”, obverse is VLDS – die dot over the E in LIBERTY. Die scratches under Lincoln’s chin.
• Reverse is MDS – die gouges around the U and under the N of UNITED. Die gouge between the M and E of AMERICA.
