1996 (P) Lincoln Memorial Cent - P-1DER-024WS Trail Die Reverse

Description

Moderate fluting lines from columns 2 and 3 run down into the stylobate on 1996P-1DER-024WS, and the steps under columns 5 to 8 bend lightly to moderately, all at 180°, due south. Those bent steps, made by trails crossing the Memorial's stairway, give the WS in TrailDies' number, which otherwise records a P-mint 1996 cent with a reverse design extension (DER), file 024. The coin described is at a middle die state, with a die dot over the 6 in the date and a chip low on column 12. Patrick Gaughan of Pennsylvania found it. The usual explanation for wavy steps is polishing of the die by a rotary buff; others attribute them to die movement against the hub.
