1996 (P) Lincoln Memorial Cent - P-1DER-023WS Trail Die Reverse

Description

A long scratch linking the D of UNITED with the U of UNUM is the clearest marker on 1996P-1DER-023WS, together with scratches across ONE and CENT, on a late-state reverse paired with a middle-state obverse that has no markers noted. The trails themselves are light: the steps under columns 5, 6 and 7 waver slightly, more on the left, running south at 180°. That waver is what TrailDies calls wavy steps, trails crossing the Memorial's stairway. In its code, the date 1996 carries the P of Philadelphia, the 1 means one cent, DER refers to a reverse design extension, and 023WS is the file with its wavy-step type. Bent steps of this sort are usually put down to die polishing with a rotary tool, with die-to-hub movement as the alternative some favor.
