1996 (P) Lincoln Memorial Cent - P-1DER-022WS Trail Die Reverse

Description

Moderate step deviation from column 5 through column 8, heavier toward the left, appears on 1996P-1DER-022WS, the same pattern TrailDies records for 1996P-1DER-021WS. The die markers separate them. The coin TrailDies records for this one is very worn, a very late die state with a gouge in bay 1 and another just right of the O in ONE; nothing is noted on the obverse. Wavy steps, for those new to the term, are trails that cut across the Memorial's staircase and bend its treads. The direction is 180°, due south. The code itself breaks into the 1996 Philadelphia cent, the reverse design-extension group DER, file 022 and WS. The steps' waviness is generally credited to rotary polishing of the die, though a minority credits movement of the die against the hub.
