Description

1996P-1DER-021WS is a wavy-step reverse on a 1996 Philadelphia Lincoln cent: trails run across the Memorial's stairs, and the steps under columns 5, 6, 7 and 8 show a moderate bend, strongest on the left. The lines run at 180°, due south. The code pairs 1996P (year, P mint) and 1 (cent) with DER, TrailDies' tag for a design extension on the reverse, then file 021 and the WS suffix. On the coin TrailDies describes, the reverse is at a middle die state and the obverse at a late one with nothing noted. Look for die dots inside the O of ONE, a gouge left of the C in AMERICA and another right of its A. Most specialists trace wavy steps to a rotary buff used to polish the die; some trace them to the die moving against the hub.
