1996-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002

Description

Cross-referenced as CONECA 1-O-V and Crawford CDDO-001, this 1996-D Lincoln Memorial Cent was attributed by the Wexler Team and displays counterclockwise hub doubling from a pivot at approximately 7:00. The spread affects IN GOD WE TRUST, hair details at the top of the head, the front hair curls, and slightly the date. Struck in copper-plated zinc at the Denver Mint, this cent comes from a year of substantial production that generated multiple cataloged die varieties. The 7:00 pivot point means design elements in the upper right quadrant of the obverse — particularly TRUST and the hair above Lincoln's forehead — show the greatest displacement, while features near the pivot remain relatively unaffected. Obverse die markers include a short vertical die gouge on the upper center of the shoulder and a short die gouge running northwest from the lower left of Y in LIBERTY. The reverse carries small die gouges above the lower left portion of the Lincoln Memorial. Notably, the reverse die used for this variety has also been found paired with a non-doubled obverse die, confirming that the reverse itself is unremarkable and only the obverse carries the hub doubling.
