1995-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-004

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team as 1995-D 1¢ WDDR-004, this Lincoln Memorial Cent reveals a partial extra Memorial column at the top of the 10th Memorial bay — one of the most visually distinctive forms of Memorial reverse doubled die varieties, where hub displacement in certain directions creates what appears to be an additional structural column within the Lincoln Memorial's colonnade. The partial nature indicates the doubling is visible only at the upper portion of the bay, suggesting the hub displacement vector produced diminishing separation as it moved downward along the column area. Obverse die markers include die gouges between the upper G and O of GOD, a small die gouge above the left side of the B in LIBERTY, and a die gouge to the right of the bottom of the second T in TRUST. Reverse markers show a die gouge below the right side of the R in AMERICA and a short die scratch running from the top of the C in AMERICA to the rim. No additional cross-references are currently known. The Lincoln Memorial Cent in 1995 was struck at the Denver Mint in copper-plated zinc composition (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) weighing 2.5 grams with a 19.05 mm diameter. Frank Gasparro's Memorial reverse — depicting the Lincoln Memorial with its twelve columns, seated Lincoln statue visible between the central columns, and inscribed entablature — served from 1959 through 2008. Victor David Brenner designed the obverse portrait of Abraham Lincoln. The 10th bay is positioned near the right side of the Memorial facade, and the partial extra column effect at this location creates a visually notable anomaly that distinguishes this die from the many other 1995-D DDR varieties. The die gouge pattern across the obverse motto and inscription letters provides a reliable secondary confirmation method once the reverse column doubling has been identified.
