1993P-1DER-064T Trail Die Reverse

Description

Bob Piazza of Florida discovered 1993P-1DER-064T, a trail die whose reverse tells a layered story of production and remediation. Trail lines extend from the upper right corners of the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM and from the tops of letters in STATES, with additional trails on the right urn and the letters of ONE CENT — including a trail that crosses over from the left side of the horizontal bar of the T in CENT. The approximate offset direction is 060 degrees. Classified at Stage A with the obverse in EDS and the reverse in early-mid die state (EMDS), this variety already shows evidence of a clash event and its aftermath. Die scratches running through the center of the Memorial bays are identified as polishing marks from Mint personnel who ground the die surface to remove remnants of a prior clash. This sequence — clash, detection, polishing, continued service — is readable in the surface like a forensic timeline. No obverse markers were noted, while the complement of trail lines, clash-polishing scratches, and defined offset direction makes the reverse diagnostically rich.
