Description

Detecting a trail die variety in early die state (EDS) is particularly valuable because it captures the trail die characteristics fresh from hubbing, before subsequent striking degraded the original anomaly. Louis Schaeffer's discovery of 1993P-1DER-062WS at Stage A in EDS provides exactly this kind of early snapshot. Both the obverse and reverse are in EDS — a symmetric pairing indicating both dies were relatively new, likely from the early production runs of a freshly installed die pair. Obverse markers include small die gouges near the ERT of LIBERTY, while no reverse markers were noted, consistent with a die that had not yet accumulated visible damage. Stage A EDS represents the earliest point in the staging system where a variety is typically documented: the trail die characteristics exist from hubbing, but the die has not yet developed the additional wear that later stages accumulate. For researchers studying how wavy-step signatures evolve, an EDS example like 062WS serves as a baseline against which later-state specimens can be compared.

Die Markers

  • Stage “A”, obverse is EDS – small die gouges are seen by the ERT of LIBERTY.
  • Reverse is EDS – none noted.
