1993 (P) Lincoln Memorial Cent - P-1DER-062WS Trail Die Reverse

Description

Every column on 1993P-1DER-062WS shows the effect: moderate fluting lines run into the stylobate below the outer columns, 1 to 3 and 10 to 12, and the stairs under columns 4 through 9 bend strongly to moderately. TrailDies points out that distortion under all the columns is unusual for a wavy-step die. The offset is 170°, just east of due south. The code is the Philadelphia year 1993P, the cent's 1, DER for TrailDies' reverse design extension, file 062 and WS (wavy steps, the bent-stair look of trails crossing the Memorial's steps). The coin is an early die state, with small gouges near the ERT of LIBERTY. Louis Schaeffer found it. Trails of this sort are usually put down to a rotary buff used to polish the die face, though a few specialists attribute them to the die moving against the hub.
