Description

Vertical die scratches cutting through LIBERTY are among the most visually striking obverse die markers on Lincoln cents, and Jon Walker's discovery of 1993P-1DER-061T features exactly this type of prominent damage. The scratches run vertically through the LIBERTY inscription — perpendicular to the letter baseline — creating a pattern immediately apparent under low magnification. Vertical scratching through legend letters typically results from die maintenance: when a die face is polished to remove clash marks or surface irregularities, the tool can leave directional marks crossing every design element in its path. Because LIBERTY is positioned along the upper-right arc of the obverse, it sits in the path of die-dressing strokes that sweep across the portrait field. The "T" suffix indicates trail lines without wavy-step characteristics on this Stage B mid-die-state die. No reverse markers were noted, placing the attribution burden entirely on the obverse scratches — which, given their distinctiveness, are more than adequate for identification.
