1993 (P) Lincoln Memorial Cent - P-1DER-058T Trail Die Reverse

Description

Only one trail line marks 1993P-1DER-058T, and it comes off the T of CENT at 070°, east-northeast, toward the right and slightly up. TrailDies codes it with the year and P mint mark, the cent's denomination digit, DER (reverse, design extension), file 058 and T for trails. The reverse die was heavily abraded to remove a clash, and the entry draws attention to how the trail line differs from those abrasion lines. The coin is a late die state, with a small gouge under the two 9s of the date; TrailDies reasons that the obverse die was replaced while this reverse stayed in service. Polish applied to the die with a rotary buff is the usual suspect, though a few attribute the lines to the die moving against the hub.

Die Markers

• Stage “C” – obverse is LDS – small die gouge below the two nine digits of the date.
• Reverse is LDS – heavy die abrasion to remove a die clash from the reverse die. Both dies appear to be of a similar die state, which would lead one to believe that the die clash happened early on in both dies. It is obvious that the obverse die was replaced, while the reverse die was still used in service.
