Description

TrailDies' 1993P-1DER-052WS is a Philadelphia cent of 1993 whose reverse die carries a design extension (DER); it is file 052 and of the wavy-step type (WS). Moderate bending crosses the stairs beneath columns 5 through 8, which is how trails show on a wavy-step die, and the offset is 180°, toward the lower rim. The coin is an early-middle die state (stage B). Small gouges sit on both 9s of the date, and on the reverse a gouge lies above the corners of the stylobate's left end. Polishing the die with a rotary tool is the generally accepted cause, with die-against-hub movement offered by some as an alternative.
