Description

A single die can accumulate multiple types of anomalies during its working life, and 1993P-1DER-049WS illustrates this by combining the wavy-step trail die phenomenon with die clashing — two mechanically distinct events coexisting on one reverse. Trail die effects result from the hubbing process when the hub does not fully seat during impression; die clashing occurs during production when the dies strike each other without a planchet between them. On this Stage B mid-die-state die, clash marks appear in bays 4, 8, and 9 of the Memorial building. The bay numbering counts open spaces between the twelve columns from left to right, and clash marks in three bays — two adjacent (8 and 9) plus one isolated (4) — suggest the clash event left impressions across a broad swath of the die face. The coexistence of trail die and clash characteristics on a single die is coincidental — one originated during manufacture, the other during production — but makes the variety doubly interesting to collectors who specialize in either category.
