Clash marks in bays 4, 8 and 9 are the reverse markers TrailDies gives for 1993P-1DER-049WS, on a middle-die-state coin with nothing noted on the obverse. The wavy steps are moderate, below columns 5 to 8 and heaviest on the left, with an offset of 180°, due south. The number is built from 1993P (year, Philadelphia), 1 (cent), DER (reverse design extension), 049 (file) and WS (wavy steps). Wavy steps are trails that run across the Memorial's staircase, so the step lines appear wobbly. The common explanation is die polishing with a rotary tool; others think the lines come from the die moving against the hub.
