1993P-1DER-046WS Trail Die Reverse

Description

When the obverse and reverse dies in a pair show dramatically different states of wear, the mismatch reveals a die replacement mid-production — and 1993P-1DER-046WS presents exactly that asymmetry. Classified at Stage C, the obverse is in early die state (EDS), crisp and relatively fresh, while the reverse has reached late die state (LDS) with extensive deterioration. The fresh obverse was clearly a replacement installed while the aging reverse continued striking. Those reverse scars are substantial: a die scrape runs from the bottom of UNITED through column 1 into bay 1, a die chip sits on the left edge of the cornice, another chip occupies column 2, a die clash impression appears in bay 10, and yet another chip has formed in column 11. Five distinct markers across the Memorial facade point to a die kept in service well past the point where many would have been retired. The contrast between pristine obverse and battered reverse makes 046WS a compelling example of how die pair management could produce coins that are simultaneously early and late state.
