1993P-1DER-037T Trail Die Reverse

Description

The companion piece to the only documented 1993 Philadelphia trail die obverse (1993P-1DEO-001), 1993P-1DER-037T is paired with that obverse die, making this the sole 1993 die pair known to exhibit trail effects on both sides of the coin. The "T" suffix (rather than "WS" for wavy steps) indicates the trail evidence is characterized by letter distortion rather than staircase deviation. Slight letter distortion is visible on the Ts of STATES and on the letters EPU and the periods of E PLURIBUS UNUM. Although this die lacks the long, dramatic trail lines seen on some other varieties, the direction of die movement can be estimated at approximately 330 degrees — nearly due north-northwest — based on the consistent directionality of the letter distortion. This places the die slide almost perpendicular to the typical east-west orientation of many other trail die varieties, suggesting a different mechanical cause. That both the obverse and reverse dies in this pair show trail effects is mechanically significant: it demonstrates the lateral movement occurred at the press level. When only one die shows trail evidence, the movement might be attributed to that die shifting in its holder; when both dies exhibit it, the entire press stroke involved lateral displacement, pointing to worn press components or improper assembly.
