1993P-1DER-036WS Trail Die Reverse
Error
Description
One of the most educational entries in the 1993 trail die census, 1993P-1DER-036WS on the 1993 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent preserves a critical visual distinction that beginning collectors often miss: the difference between die deterioration flow lines and trail lines. The reverse of this late die state (LDS) variety shows die deterioration flow lines on the bottom of the letters E, N, and T of CENT, and the key observation is that these flow lines are radial in direction — fanning outward from the letters in multiple directions — while trail lines run parallel to one another in a single consistent direction. This radial-versus-parallel distinction is the fundamental diagnostic separating the two phenomena. Flow lines develop as the die wears and metal from each strike is pushed outward from raised design elements (recessed in the die), creating radial patterns spreading from letters and features. Trail lines result from lateral die movement during a single strike and maintain strict parallelism because every point on the die moved in the same direction. On the obverse, this Stage C die exhibits an odd crescent-shaped die break on the lower part of the first 9 in the date. Understanding this distinction is essential because late-die-state coins frequently show both phenomena on the same coin, and misidentifying flow lines as trail lines leads to false attribution.
Die Markers
- Stage “C”, obverse is LDS – odd crescent shaped die break on the lower part of the first 9 of the DATE.
- Reverse is LDS – die deterioration flow lines on the bottom of the E, N and T of CENT. Notice how these lines are radial in direction and not parallel like trail lines.
