Exhibiting moderate step deviation under columns 5 through 8, 1993P-1DER-035WS on the 1993 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent concentrates its trail line effects in the right-center portion of the Memorial staircase. Step deviation — the visible distortion of the normally straight, horizontal stair lines — is the hallmark of "WS" (wavy steps) trail die varieties, ranging from barely perceptible undulation to dramatic warping. Moderate deviation, as documented here, is visible under low magnification but not so severe as to catch attention during casual examination. Die markers for this Stage B, mid-die state variety are concentrated on the reverse: a die chip accompanied by a die crack in column 1 of the Memorial, and another small die chip in the stairs below bay 7. Column 1 — the leftmost column as viewed on the coin — is one of the most frequently cited failure locations across the entire trail die census. The thin, raised column on the coin corresponds to a narrow, deep channel in the die, and the walls of this channel are subject to concentrated lateral force during every strike. The repeated appearance of column 1 damage across many different dies suggests a systemic vulnerability in the Memorial design's die geometry rather than coincidental failure. The obverse die shows no notable markers in this die state.
