1993 (P) Lincoln Memorial Cent - P-1DER-031WS Trail Die Reverse

Description

Philadelphia's 1993 cent reverses fill many TrailDies files, and 1993P-1DER-031WS is a moderate example. The code reads 1993P for the year and mint, then 1, a one-cent coin, then DER, which TrailDies uses for a design extension on the reverse; 031 is the file and WS means wavy steps. Moderate fluting lines carry down from columns 1, 2 and 3 into the stylobate, and the stairs under columns 5 through 8 ripple to a moderate degree, the bent-step look that gives the type its name. The offset is 200°, south-southwest. On the middle-die-state coin there is a gouge near the left corner of the cornice and a few small scratches below the U of PLURIBUS. Like trails generally, these are most often traced to the die being polished with a rotary tool, while some attribute them to the die's movement against the hub.
