1993D-1DER-027WS Trail Die Reverse

Description

Tom Steinbaugh of Vancouver, Washington discovered the 027WS, extending the geographic reach of this census to the Pacific Northwest. The network of trail die contributors for the 1993-D cent ultimately spanned from Florida (Bob Piazza) to Kentucky (Jeremy Gardner) to Illinois (Michael Pope) to North Carolina (C. L. Long) to Washington state (Steinbaugh) — a cross-country collaboration conducted largely through the mail, with hobbyists shipping coins and photographs to catalog maintainers who compiled the results into a unified census. Steinbaugh's variety shows moderate fluting under columns 2 and 3 and moderate step deviation under columns 5 through 8, offset at 190 degrees. On the obverse, short die scratches behind Lincoln's neck provide attribution, while the reverse carries a die gouge described as a "dot" under the memorial base — the parenthetical clarification indicating that this gouge is round rather than elongated, a shape distinction that helps searchers distinguish it from nearby die scratches. Cataloged at Stage B mid-die-state. Struck at Denver on copper-plated zinc planchets, 2.5 grams, 19mm, plain edge.
