1993 (D) Lincoln Memorial Cent - D-1DER-021T Trail Die Reverse

Description

1993D-1DER-021T is a 1993 Denver cent with trails on the reverse: its number puts date and mint (1993D) before the denomination (1), the side code DER for design extension reverse, the file (021) and the type (T). The lines rise from the motto, E PLURIBUS UNUM, at the tops of its letters, and hints of trails mixed with metal flow lines appear on ATES in STATES. TrailDies heads the entry 340°, north-northwest. The coin it describes is a late die state, with a curved scratch beside the rim just under the date, a crack running through UNUM to the final period, and a gouge left of the O in ONE. Jeremy Gardner found it. Trails are usually ascribed to polishing of the die with a rotary buff; some ascribe them to the die moving against the hub.

• Stage “C”, obverse is LDS – curved die scratch next to the rim just below the date.
• Reverse is LDS – die crack in the word UNUM to the last period. Die gouge to the left of the O in ONE.
