Description
TrailDies prints this file as 1993D-1DER-020, without the WS suffix its neighbours carry, though what it describes is a wavy-step reverse. The rest of the code follows the usual pattern: 1993 and D for Denver, the single 1 for a cent, DER for the reverse-side design extension, and 020 as the file. The stairs beneath columns 5 through 8 bend strongly to moderately, with the lines running at 180°, straight down the coin. On the late-die-state example, a gouge sits under the L of LIBERTY on the obverse and another in the stylobate under column 2 on the reverse. Jimmy Ehrhart found it. Wavy steps are generally thought to come from polishing the die with a rotary tool; some argue instead for movement of the die against the hub.
Die Markers
- Stage “C”, obverse is LDS – die gouge under the L of LIBERTY.
- Reverse is LDS – Die gouge in the stylobate under column 2.
