Description

1993D-1DER-003WS is a straightforward wavy-step die with no fluting extension recorded: the stairs under columns 5, 6, 7 and 8 bend moderately, offset at 180°, straight downward. The term covers trails that cross the Memorial's steps and warp their outline. The number decodes as 1993-D, a cent, TrailDies' reverse-design extension code DER, file 003 and the WS type. Two small markers on the middle-die-state coin help separate it from the other 1993-D wavy-step dies: a gouge in front of Lincoln's nose and one between the M and E of AMERICA. Polishing of the die with a rotary tool is the usual explanation, with die movement against the hub the less common one.
