Positional analysis of the die gouges on this variety reveals how specialists navigate the Lincoln cent's small canvas. On the obverse, a small die gouge in front of Lincoln's nose anchors attribution — the nose is one of the highest-relief elements on the portrait, making any adjacent mark visible even under modest magnification. On the reverse, a die gouge between the M and E of AMERICA provides a second fixed reference point. The trail die effect manifests as moderate step deviation under columns 5 through 8, offset at 180 degrees. The catalog entry carries the WS suffix despite describing only step deviation without mentioning fluting, suggesting that any fluting was too subtle to warrant explicit description, or that the WS classification was applied based on the overall displacement character.
