1993 (D) Lincoln Memorial Cent - D-1DER-002WS Trail Die Reverse

Description

Strong bending of the steps beneath the four middle columns, 5 to 8, is the main feature of 1993D-1DER-002WS; fluting from columns 2 and 3 also reaches moderately into the stylobate. The offset is 190°, a little west of south. In TrailDies' code, 1993D is the Denver year, 1 the cent, DER a reverse design extension, 002 the file, and WS wavy steps, its name for trails that run over the Memorial's staircase and leave it looking bent. The middle-die-state coin is plain on the obverse. On the reverse, die chips mark the lower part of column 3 and the cornice above column 4, and a scratch lies along the upper edge of the roof beneath the S of PLURIBUS. Trails are commonly attributed to rotary polishing of the die, though some think the die moved against the hub.
